Wenger looking to strengthen squad in January

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out another bid for Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, but is hopeful of strengthening his squad if a ‘special’ player becomes available.

The Gunners will start the new year as league leaders after Olivier Giroud’s second half header was enough to earn a hard-fought win over Newcastle at St James Park.

The French striker has been integral part of Wenger’s side so far this season, scoring 11 goals in all competitions and playing in virtually every game. Despite having few alternatives to Giroud up front, Wenger insists that the squad is big enough to deal with the demands that the second half of the season will bring.

“We are as many clubs, certainly on alert,” said the Arsenal manager. “If something special turns up, we will not turn it down.

“But we are not as well desperate because we have a big depth in our squad. We have shown that because our midfield for example at West Ham and at Newcastle was completely different. We changed three players and we still managed to have a very strong team.”

Giroud will be absent from the New Year’s Day encounter with Cardiff City with an ankle injury, alongside Aaron Ramsey (thigh) and Mesut Özil (shoulder), while duo Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere face late fitness tests.
